Dr. Helmer is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon who graduated from McGill University Faculty of Medicine. She completed her residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She also completed her family medicine residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
