Our Standards
Albany Cardiothoracic Surgeons was founded by Dr. Ralph Alley and Dr. Allan Stranahan over 50 years ago. Since then three generations of surgeons have performed thousands of procedures and have provided state of the art thoracic and cardiac surgical care to residents of the Capital District.
All of our board certified surgeons have completed a rigorous education which has included:
- 4 years of undergraduate college
- 4 years of medical school
- 5 year of General Surgery residency with Board Certification
- 2-3 years of Cardiothoracic residency with Board Certification
Board certification requires completion of an accredited training program (residency) and passing a rigorous written and oral examination. Examinations and training accreditations are administered by the American Board of Surgery (General Surgery, www.absurg.org) and American Board of Thoracic Surgery (Cardiothoracic Surgery, www.abts.org/doc/4016). Completion of these board certifications assures that surgeons have the clinical and technical expertise to competently perform cardiac and thoracic surgery. All surgeons further their education by attending meetings and workshops. Board certification is maintained not only by attending meetings but also by passing a written examination every 10 years. Maintenance of these standards by Albany Cardiothoracic Surgeons assures that our patients are receiving the highest quality medical care.
